Legenda Sungai Jernih

Seorang janda beserta dua anaknya, laki-laki dan perempuan, diundang pesta di suatu desa. Tentu saja kedua anak itu amat senang. Mereka mengenakan pakaian yang paling bagus. Di sana, mereka dijamu dengan makanan dan minuman yang enak-enak. Pesta kenduri itu dihadiri tamu. Selain diramaikan dengan musik, juga ada pertunjukan randai dan lain-lainnya. Kedua anak itu kemudian meminta izin kepada ibunya untuk melihat keramaian itu.

“Bu, kami ingin melihat randai  dan pertunjukan lainnya,” kata mereka kepada ibunya.

 “Boleh, Nak, tapi ingat, jangan pergi jauh-jauh….,” pesan ibunya.

Akan tetapi, mereka tidak puas hanya melihat pertunjukan saja. Setelah jemu menonton, mereka pergi ke tempat lain. Dalam kegembiraannya, mereka lupa akan pesan ibunya. Akhirnya kedua anak itu sampai di sebuah kolam yang sangat jernih airnya. Karena hari amat panas, timbullah selera mereka untuk mandi di kolam itu. Tanpa piker-pikir lagi, mereka segera melepas pakaian dan terjun ke dalam air yang sejuk. Mereka berenang-renang kian kemari dengan gembiranya. Mereka tidak ubahnya seperti ikan-ikan.

Tidak berapa lama, sang ibu teringat akan anak-anaknya. Mereka belum juga kembali ke tempat pesta. Mulailah sang ibu bingung. Dicarinya kesana kemari, tetapi tidak juga bersua.

Hari pun berganti petang, tetapi kedua anak itu belum juga dapat ditemukan. Si ibu pulang sendiri sambil menangis sepanjang jalan. Ia terus mengenangkan nasib kedua anaknya tersayang. Karena amat lelah, setibanya di rumah, ia segera tidur.

Ia bermimpi melihat seorang nenek. Nenek itu menghampirinya. Nenek itu berkata, “Anak-anakmu sudah menjadi penghuni kolam. Letaknya tidak jauh dari tempat pesta kemarin. Jika engkau hendak menjumpai anak-anakmu, lemparkan segenggam nasi ke dalam kolom itu. Nanti anak-anakmu akan menyambutnya.”

Begitu terbangun, si ibu segera mendatangi kolam itu sambil membawa segenggam nasi. Setibanya di tepi kolam, si ibu menebarkan nasi sambil memanggil nama anak-anaknya. Tidak berapa lama, muncullah dari dalam kolam dua ekor ikan besar yang sangat indah. Melihat kedua ikan yang indah itu, si ibu segera meratapi dan menangisi nasib kedua anaknya. Mereka telah menjadi ikan! Orang-orang sedesa juga datang ke kolam itu. Mereka mencoba menghibur kesedihan ibu yang malang itu. Akan tetapi, usaha mereka sia-sia belaka. Si ibu amat sedih hatinya.
